This is a different treatment from a regular cleaning, not a longer one. It reaches below the gumline to clean the root surfaces, and is priced per quadrant — a quarter of the mouth at a time.
A cavity caught early is a filling. The same tooth left alone becomes a crown, then a root canal, then an extraction — each step several times the price of the one before.
It rarely hurts until it is advanced, and it is the most common reason adults lose teeth that were otherwise sound. Bleeding when you brush is the early sign most people ignore.
Crowns, dentures, and implants all last longer when the gums around them are healthy. Skipping check-ups is how expensive work gets lost early.
Every exam includes a check of the soft tissue for anything that should not be there. Oral cancer is far more survivable when it is found early, and this is where it gets found.
No one tells you this part in an advertisement, so we will. None of it is a reason not to go ahead — it is simply what to expect.
If it has been a long time, an exam usually turns up more than one problem, and the written plan can look daunting. It is a list, not a bill — we will tell you what is urgent, what can wait, and what order makes sense.
If your gums need one, it is priced per quadrant and usually takes more than one visit, so the total is several times a routine cleaning. We will say so before booking, never after.
If it has been a while, cleaning and brushing can make inflamed gums bleed for the first week or two. That is the gums healing, not being damaged, and it settles. It is not a reason to stop.
Some people are fine on one visit a year. Others — smokers, diabetics, anyone with a history of gum disease — genuinely need three or four. We will tell you which you are rather than defaulting everyone to the same interval.
Most of the worry comes from not knowing what actually happens. Here is the whole process.

Tell us roughly when you were last seen and whether anything hurts. Bring a list of any medicines you take — it changes what we look for and what we recommend.

Decay between teeth and problems at the root do not show in the mirror. We take what is needed for your situation, not a fixed set for everybody.

Teeth, existing fillings and crowns, gums and pocket depths, your bite, and a check of the soft tissue. Dr. Cabral will talk you through what he sees as he goes.

If your gums are healthy, the cleaning happens now. If they are not, we will explain why a deep cleaning is the right treatment and what it costs before booking it.

Everything we found, what each item costs, and what we would do first. Nothing is booked until you say so, and you are welcome to take it away and think.

We will suggest an interval based on your gums and your risk, not a blanket six months, and we will tell you plainly why yours is what it is.

No. People stay away for all sorts of reasons — cost, fear, a bad experience, or simply time — and Dr. Cabral has seen every version of it in decades of practice. You will get a plain account of what is going on and practical options, with no pressure and no judgment. Coming in after a long gap is the useful thing to do, not something to apologise for.
A routine cleaning on healthy gums is not painful, though you will feel scraping and some cold water. If your gums are inflamed it can be tender, and if a deep cleaning is needed we numb the area first. Tell us if you are sensitive — we can work more slowly.
A regular cleaning works on the crown of the tooth and just under the gum edge. A deep cleaning goes further down, cleaning the root surface inside pockets that gum disease has opened up. It is a treatment for a diagnosed condition, not an upgrade — if your gums do not need it, we will not sell it to you.
No. How often depends on your risk of decay and what we are watching. Someone with a healthy mouth and no history needs them far less often than someone with several fillings. If you have recent X-rays from another dentist, ask them to send them and we will use those.
No — that is the opposite of what helps. Bleeding usually means inflammation from plaque left at the gumline, and the area needs cleaning more carefully, not less. If it carries on for more than a couple of weeks of good brushing, come in and let us look.
Not on a first visit. Cleaning a mouth without knowing what is in it can miss an abscess or clean over a problem that needed treating instead. Once we have seen you and know your situation, routine cleanings are straightforward.
We do not work with insurance at all. We are fee-for-service — no networks, no annual maximum, and nobody to approve your treatment but you and Dr. Cabral. The price you see is the price you pay.
