Rebuilding the missing part of the tooth so there is something for the crown to sit on. It is an extra step rather than an alternative, and we will tell you if you need it before the crown is started.
Decay does not pause. Filling a cavity ends it; leaving it means the same tooth needs a crown, then a root canal, then extraction — each step several times the cost of the last.
Nothing replaces a natural tooth as well as keeping it. A crown on a cracked molar is almost always a better outcome than removing it and replacing it later.
Composite fillings are matched to your tooth, and porcelain crowns are shaded to the teeth beside them. Neither should be the thing people notice when you talk.
On a tooth that is mostly filling already, another filling tends to fail and can split the tooth. A crown holds the remaining structure together instead of wedging it apart.
No one tells you this part in an advertisement, so we will. None of it is a reason not to go ahead — it is simply what to expect.
Sometimes how much healthy tooth is left is only clear once the decay is out. If that happens we stop and tell you, with the price, before going further — you will not be presented with a bill you did not agree to.
They wear, stain at the edges, and eventually need replacing — how soon depends on size, where it is, and whether you grind. This is normal, not a failure, and it is one of the things a check-up is watching.
To fit over it, the tooth underneath has to be reduced, and that cannot be undone. It is the right trade on a tooth that is already badly compromised, and the wrong one on a tooth a filling would still hold.
Cold or pressure can be uncomfortable for a few days to a couple of weeks, especially after a deep filling. If it is getting worse rather than better, or it wakes you at night, call us — that is worth checking.

One visit
Decay between teeth does not show in the mirror, so this is where we find out how big the problem actually is and whether a filling will hold it.
Before we start
How many surfaces, whether it is a filling or a crown, and what each costs. If there is a judgement call between the two, you will hear both sides of it.
A few minutes
Local anaesthetic, and we wait until the tooth is properly numb before starting. Small fillings sometimes do not need it — we will ask rather than assume.
Under an hour, usually
The decay comes out, the composite goes in and is set in layers, then it is shaped and polished to your bite. You eat normally the same day.
A few weeks apart
First visit: the tooth is shaped, an impression taken, and a temporary crown fitted so you leave with a tooth. Second visit: the temporary comes off and the porcelain crown is cemented.
Before you leave
A filling or crown that sits even slightly high will ache. We adjust it while you are numb and again if it still feels off once the numbness wears away — come back, it takes minutes.

Tooth-coloured. It is a composite filling, shaded to your own tooth. The advertised price is for a single surface — a cavity that reaches two or three surfaces costs more, and we will tell you which yours is after the X-ray, before anything starts.
Years, but not forever. Small ones in low-stress spots last longest; large ones on back teeth, and anything in a mouth that grinds, wear faster. We check the ones you already have at every visit rather than waiting for one to break.
Because of how much tooth is left. A filling is held by the tooth around it; if that wall is thin or cracked, a filling can act like a wedge and split it. A crown wraps the tooth instead. If it is a close call we will show you the X-ray and explain the trade rather than just deciding.
Not during it. The tooth is numbed first and what you feel is vibration and water. Afterwards, mild sensitivity to cold or pressure for a few days is normal, and ordinary pain relief handles it.
Yes, and it is straightforward. Worth saying plainly though: a sound amalgam filling that is not leaking or cracked does not have to be replaced, and swapping it means removing more tooth. If yours are failing or you want them gone for how they look, both are fair reasons — we will not pretend the first one is the case if it is really the second.
Normally two, a few weeks apart, with a temporary crown in between so you are never without a tooth. The temporary is not as strong as the final one — avoid anything very sticky on that side until it is fitted.
It depends on the teeth beside the gap. If they are healthy and untouched, an implant leaves them alone, whereas a bridge means cutting into both. If they already need crowns anyway, a bridge does two jobs at once. A bridge is usually quicker and cheaper up front; an implant tends to last longer. We will lay out both for your case.
We do not work with insurance at all. We are fee-for-service — no networks, no annual maximum, and nobody to approve your treatment but you and Dr. Cabral. The price you see is the price you pay.
