An implant is anchored in bone rather than resting on gum. Nothing lifts, slides, or has to be held in place while you eat.
Jawbone shrinks where a tooth root is missing, which over years is what hollows out the lower face. An implant works the bone the way a root did and slows that down.
A bridge has to be cut into the healthy teeth on either side of a gap. An implant stands on its own and leaves them untouched.
This is the reason most people give. Implant-held teeth bite close to the way natural teeth do, so the list of foods you avoid gets much shorter.

Done under local anaesthetic. The post goes into the bone and the site is closed. You go home the same day with aftercare instructions.
Weeks to months
The bone grows tight around the implant. Standard implants need the longest here; mini implants holding a denture are often ready sooner.
One or two visits
The crown goes on, or the denture is fitted with the attachments that snap onto the implants. We check the bite and adjust it.
Ongoing
Implants need cleaning and checking like natural teeth. The gum around them is where problems start, so the regular visits matter more here, not less.

The placement itself is done with local anaesthetic and you should not feel pain during it. Afterward expect soreness and some swelling for a few days, handled with the pain relief we recommend. Most people say it was easier than a difficult extraction.
Width, mostly. A mini implant is narrower, so it needs less bone, goes in more simply, and costs less. Standard implants are wider and stronger, which matters when one implant has to carry a single tooth under full chewing force. Minis are most often used in a group to hold a denture. We will tell you which fits your case.
Age on its own is not a barrier — people in their seventies and eighties have implants placed routinely. What matters is your general health and how much bone you have, and both are things we check at the first visit.
The implant in the bone is designed to be permanent and often lasts decades. The crown or denture attached to it is the part that wears and may need replacing along the way, the same as any other tooth restoration.
A bone graft can rebuild the ridge so an implant becomes possible. It adds cost and several months of healing before placement. In some cases mini implants are an option where standard ones are not, because they need less bone to begin with.
It is possible, but smoking meaningfully lowers the chance an implant takes hold and raises the chance of problems later. Tell us either way — we would rather plan around it honestly than have it come as a surprise.
